Artists Speak Out and Show Some World Love

‘What the world needs now, is love sweet love; it’s the only thing, that there’s just too little of’

These lyrics have been swimming around in my head for the last several weeks.  No matter your political affiliation, I think you can agree that there has been a massive change in the air since the US election.

As a new United States President is sworn in, I find myself reflecting upon the past few months.  There have been major political changes on both sides of the Atlantic.

While I prefer to leave politics out of my choreography, opting for themes based in psychological theory or autobiographical stories, I have found myself shocked, saddened, and motivated to use my artistic voice as a result of the Brexit vote and the US Presidential vote.

There has been a shift in the air from openness and acceptance to that of oppression, fear, and discrimination.

  • The UK Home Office reported that hate crimes have risen by 41% in United Kingdom since the Brexit vote in June, 2016.
  • The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) found a similar surge in the United States directly following the result of the 2016 Presidential Election.

As a person taking part in life in this world, I feel it is my duty to stand up and say something.  I believe that each person has a voice.  We must stand together and spread love, dispelling the hate that has been born in ignorance.

I believe that love will win.  I know that by standing together, we will defeat the resurgence of ignorance and hate currently plaguing our society.

I have chosen to share with you this raw, improvised rehearsal footage because it expresses how I feel right now… raw, exposed, unsure, confused.

For me, this is the most authentic way to share my feelings.

For this piece to be polished would diminish the gut place from which the movement sprang forth.

As I try desperately to find the words for my feelings, I again realize this is the reason I am an artist, a dancer.  I implore you to watch my movement and explore your own feelings regarding recent world events.

If your voice needs a platform, I ask you to create your own expression to this song (“What the World Needs Now”) or any other that speaks to you.  Share your statement using the hashtag #worldlove to create a wave of love and let our voices be heard.

We are all just one voice until we unite.

Never underestimate your power to be true to your beliefs and stand up for yourself and your peers.

Let the world know that love and acceptance will prevail.  #artistsspeakout
